THE PROCESS

The process of a woodcarving starts with an idea or observation which has been recorded in a sketchbook. This offers freedom in developing an idea with little time or physical effort. Once the sketch has been chosen it is then reproduced to the scale required on a piece of card, the shape is cut out and acts as a template for the beginning of the carving.
A plank of lime wood is selected and the template is drawn around on the wood and then a band-saw is used to cut out the shape. Once the initial shape has been cut out the process of carving begins. A selection of chisels are used, each  achieving a different set of cuts as required. Once I am happy with the carved form the piece is sanded smooth and is painted with diluted acrylic paints and then varnished with clear acrylic varnish.
